I believe that a good work-life balance is when you are living your life’s purpose or Ikigai as the Japanese call it. In other words when you have harmony between all of the different aspects of your life.
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance protects you from stress and increases your productivity. Setting reasonable boundaries gives you time and energy to devote to your relationships and other personal activities.
However, busy schedules can make it difficult to detach at the end of the workday unless you develop habits that help you to be fully present at home.
Assessment
Rate how much you agree with each of the four statements below on a scale of 1 (least) to 4 (most). Once completed add your scores together. The highest score you can receive is 16.
- I feel like I am neglecting my responsibilities at home or work.
- I ask others for help when I need it.
- My priorities are clear.
- I manage workplace stress effectively.
Next steps
What was your score? If you did not score 16 in total what changes can you make right now that will improve your work-life balance and get you a score of 16?
Remember if you know your life’s purpose and are living that life right now your work-life balance will be in harmony. In fact, I believe that when you find your Ikigai you will never work another day in your life.
